Introduction
At St. Mark’s our children can also take additional roles and responsibilities.
Elite Safety Officers
Our Elite Safety Junior Officers are in charge of ensuring our school is healthy and safe.
They work very closely with Mrs Hussain and Mrs Beresford to complete monthly checklists ensuring any health and safety concerns are highlighted. They make plans for future projects and work with contractors to plan and design areas in school to improve them.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Meet monthly to carry out a health and safety walk of the school.
- Work closely with Mrs Hussain and Mrs Beresford and report any concerns in their classroom or around school.
- Promote health and safety in their classrooms, around school and in our community.

“We noticed that when people washed their hands or filled their water bottles, sometimes the floor got wet. We told Mrs Hussain and now we have a special mat that collects the water and doesn’t make it slippy.” KS2 child
“Some of the playground equipment is getting a bit old. This year we are going to plan to redesign it with Mrs Hussain. I am excited, I hope we get a slide.” KS2 child
Librarians
Our St Mark’s Librarians are responsible for helping to make our school reading areas welcoming, organised and enjoyable place for everyone. They are enthusiastic about books and enjoy encouraging other children to develop a love of reading.
Our Librarians’ Mission:
To help every child discover a book they love and to make our reading spaces places where everyone feels welcome, inspired and excited to read!
Roles and Responsibilities
Roles and responsibilities:
- Help to keep the library tidy, organised and welcoming.
- Organise reading areas tidy, organised and enjoyable.
- Help other pupils find books that they might enjoy.
- Recommend books and share their favourite reads with others.
- Encourage children to take care of library books and return them when they are finished.
- Help to organise and display books in an appealing way.
- Help with library activities, book clubs and special reading events.
- Share ideas with staff about how we can make our library even better and interview other pupils about what they want for our school library.
- Be positive role models for other pupils by showing enthusiasm for reading.
- Plan visits to our local library and get involved with library initiatives.
Personal qualities needed:
- Kind and welcoming – making everyone feel comfortable in the library.
- Responsible – taking care of books and completing tasks reliably.
- Organised – helping to keep the library neat and tidy.
- Helpful – supporting other children when they need assistance.
- Enthusiastic – showing a genuine love of books and reading.
- A good role model – demonstrating positive behaviour and respect for others.
- A good communicator – able to listen to others and share ideas confidently.
Junior PCSOs
Junior PCSOs is a leadership initiative developed by West Midlands Police and Neighbourhood Teams.
The aim of the scheme is to empower school to tackle and educate in the issues of parking and road safety around their school sites. It is also to raise awareness of pupils, parents and drivers of the dangers that exist and to work together to ensure safer environments for us all.
Each year, the newly formed group of Junior PCSO’S will undertake some initial training with our local police link, PC Manns, as well as trained staff in school. They will continue in the role for this academic year and train younger aspiring PCSOs throughout the year.
Job Description
Our new recruits have signed up to a very important task. Their job role includes learning and promoting:
- How to keep themselves and other people safe on the roads around school.
- Road safety.
- Seat belts and in-car safety.
Throughout the year, you will see our PCSOs on patrol doing the following:
- Morning parking patrol around the school.
- Afternoon parking patrol around the school.
- Vehicle speed watch.
- School road safety talk supported by PC Manns
Head Boy and Girl
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assist Mrs Whittingham and others members of the SLT in sustaining the strong character of the school by supporting the implementation of relevant aspects of the school development plan.
- Represent the school at key events in the community.
- Welcome visitors to the school, including leading learning walks.
- Represent the school at key Masses and events.
Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl:
- Assist the Head Boy and Head Girl in their roles.
- Work with senior and middle leaders on curriculum specific tasks.
- Assist during school events and when there are visitors in school.
Prefects
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assist the Head and Deputy Head Boys and Girls in their roles.
- Work with the Year 6 team to plan and co-ordinate the deployment of prefects across the school.
- Ensure that all prefects are carrying out their duties effectively.
- Carry out break, lunch and indoor play duties.
- Monitor pupil behaviour and set an excellent example to all pupils.
