Today we went on a class trip to Sandwell Valley. We used maps and compasses to find our way to the River Tame. As we walked along the river, we learnt about meanders and erosion. We learnt about the differences between rivers and canals and how they were used in our area over time. We carried out a river investigation, testing the volume of water flowing and the speed. We also learnt about dams and why there was one created here in Sandwell Valley.

We also classified different microorganisms such as jelly ear, beard lichens and fungus. We found them on logs, in the grass and on trees. We also classified different plants and trees, comparing their similarities and differences (as well as giving reasons for our choices). As we explored Sandwell Valley, we observed different habitats such as wetlands, grasslands and woodlands and the animals that live there.

A highlight was our children holding out mealworms for the robin to eat and him flying into our hands – WOW! A grat day combining science and geography.
